The municipality of Wassenaar attaches great importance to the preservation of its monuments, iconic characteristic buildings or buildings located in the protected city scapes. The municipality puts the preservation of cultural-historical values first. With regard to sustainable measures, the municipality believes that they are taken at a "natural moment", so only when regular maintenance or restoration is necessary. A report from the monument guard or other expert organization can help determine this moment.
Historical buildings are by their nature sustainable. The long life of the old materials can be maintained for an extra long time through regular maintenance, expert restoration and careful habitation. That is good for the environment and your wallet. Simple measures can already yield a lot of comfort and energy gains. It is also advisable to investigate the historical use of your building. You will be surprised how many "old" solutions are still applicable.
In that case, we recommend that you first contact the municipality via telephone number 14070 or gemeente@wassenaar.nl. If a permit is required, your plan will also be submitted to the Welfare and Cultural Heritage Committee. Our expert advisers will assess your plan for its monumental value with the sustainable measures as an integral part. There is more possible than you may think with your historic building!
“If even an historic canal house can be sustainable, it can be done anywhere!”. With these words Wubbo Ockels and Suze Gehem founded De Groene Grachten in 2012.
De Groene Grachten owes its name to its very first project on the Amsterdam Prinsengracht. In 2012, we worked with 15 partners to make six canal houses more sustainable. We no longer limit ourselves to the canals of Amsterdam, but are active all over the country. We help you to make your home, office, mill, church, farm or other monumental building more sustainable. We do this with independent advice and guidance during the implementation phase.
In recent years, De Groene Grachten has worked on making hundreds of projects more sustainable. Some examples are the Zaanse Schans, Soestdijk Palace, student association L.A.N.X., Royal Tropical Institute and Green Light District.
